How to Paint Exterior Railings

The quickest and easiest way to enhance the exterior look of your home is to give the metal railings a fresh coat of paint. Sherwin-Williams offers a variety of the best paints for exterior railings.

Simply apply an oil-based enamel undercoat to all surfaces after the primer application, let it dry, and it will look like new.

Supplies for This Project

  • Econo-Primer

  • Alkyd Paint (P.A.B.): Slow-drying alkyd enamel paint

  • Fast-drying Metalex

  • Pressure washer

  • Sandpaper or sander

  • Sponge

1. Wash the railing surface to remove loose paint or residue.

2. Lightly sand rough areas to ensure the paint has a sufficiently smooth surface to adhere to.

3. Once the surface is dry and in good condition, use a medium-sized brush to apply primer to the railing; use either oil-based enamel primer for all surfaces or latex enamel primer for all surfaces.

4. After the primer application has dried, use a medium-sized brush to paint the railing using either oil-based enamel paint for all surfaces or latex enamel paint for all surfaces.

5. Allow the paint to dry before applying a second coat or touching it up. Then, touch up any areas that need additional attention, and enjoy your new exterior railing.

BEFORE and AFTER…

¡WARNING! Removing old paint through sanding, scraping, or other means may generate dust or fumes containing lead. Exposure to lead dust or fumes can cause brain damage or other adverse health effects, especially in children or pregnant women. Controlling exposure to lead or other hazardous substances requires the use of proper protective equipment, such as a properly fitted respirator (NIOSH-approved), and appropriate containment and cleanup measures.
